Loose-lead walking: week one

Short sessions, lots of rewards. Stop before either of you gets fed up.

  1. 1

    Reward by your leg, indoors

Walk around the kitchen. Every time your dog is next to your leg, say “yes” and drop a treat by your foot. 2 minutes, twice a day.

  2. 2

Stop when the lead goes tight

On walks, the moment the lead tightens, stand still. When it goes slack, say “yes” and walk on. Walking on is the reward.

  3. 3

    Change direction

If your dog is pulling towards something, turn and walk the other way. Reward when they catch up beside you.

  4. 4

    One calm street

Pick one quiet street and practise the whole length of it every day. Note how many stops you needed.
